6 weeks to erect and full time scaffolder onsite to complete ongoing alterations
TBS Group was engaged to erect scaffolding around Block 4 of the Mountain Rd Apartments in Auckland.
This was to allow full access to all exterior faces of the building and erect a free spanning roof over the entire building to provide weather protection for a complete re clad / re roof of the leaking apartment.
The exterior scaffold had to be designed to support the massive free spanning roof and for the entire structure to be completely contained. The team were faced with the signficant challenge of allowing for the extreme wind loadings for a structure of this size, all within the very confined foot print of the site and without tying into the building itself.
A system of propping the basement carpark to secure the scaffold against wind loading and up lift was designed in conjunction with the engineers from ITL to eliminate the need for large counter weights or ground anchors, which the size of the site could not accommodate. Approximately 80 tonnes of equipment was required in elevation/exterior scaffold and approx. 8.3 tonnes in the roof section.
The Keder XL roof system supplied from LAYHER (at the time of the build, the largest free spanning in the country) saw the 14 truss sections erected in pairs on a neighbouring property and craned into place in 7 lifts, with the rest of the roof ties and bracing being erected in place before the roof sheets were pulled over by hand.
The project was completed in a timely manner and without incident, a great achievement by the team given the size of the site, limited time available and the assembly required to be completed while the building remained occupied outside of working hours.
