Taupo District Council
TBS was awarded the contract to prepare and paint the external structural steel work of the Taupo Events Centre for the Taupo District Council.
The scope of the work included a water wash and abrasive blast to prepare the steel, followed by the application of a standard three coat paint system consisting of a zinc primer coat, an epoxy build coat, and a polyurethane top coat. A fully encapsulated access and containment structure was erected around each steel support beam as
work commenced along the building.
The Taupo Events Center was last maintained approximately 4 – 5 years ago and this was its third makeover since its construction. The team consisted of a site supervisor and five blaster/painters, as well as three abseiling subcontractors.
Since commencement of the project, the scope was extended to also include the preparation and painting of the the roof supports and columns of the building. The crew faced a number of challenges during execution of the works, including the need to meet the same completion date with an increased scope, maintaining the operational needs of the stadium and simultaneously ensuing the safety of the public using the facility.
