Watercare Services Ltd
This project was for the external refurbishment of four pipe bridges on the Watercare Services western interceptor sewer main.
Specifically it involved, the application of a new coating system to the bridges and the completion of a number of structural repairs, including:
- The removal and replacement of structural steel elements;
- Replacement of stringer sliding bearings;
- Replacement of stringer holding down bolts; and
- Repairs to the concrete piers
The works demonstrate TBS’ experience in a variety of bridge maintenance and repair techniques including structural steel and concrete repairs.
The sites presented some challenges to the project team, largely due to the difficulties associated with working over a marine environment with a number tidal constraints and the risks with working at height. Full containment was also required for all abrasive blasting operations and demolition works with zero discharge. This was successfully achieved through the design and installation of access and containment systems on
all the bridges to prevent discharges to the marine environment and the provision of a safer working platform for the maintenance crew.
Other challenges involved devising a method to facilitate the replacement of the bearing and holding down bolts on the bridges. This was overcome through the design and installation of temporary support structures to facilitate the jacking of the live sewer mains to enable the bolts to be replaced.
